Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the academy located?
Are you licensed by the state?
The Texas Workforce Commission regulates all activities of classes, workshops, and seminars that take place within Texas. We have gone through the proper channels to operate under TWC standards. No license is given to operate under our status.
If I take all the classes, will I be a certified make-up artist?
You will receive a certificate of completion for each class taken. Because we do not administer tests or require homework, no certification is given. There is no standard regulation of make-up artists nationwide. In this industry, a certificate does not mean much; your portfolio will speak for you and is what will get you jobs.
I have spoken to other schools that have told me 15 hours is all that is needed to learn beauty make-up. Is this true and if so why does your academy offer so many classes?
Our extensive curriculum allows you to get the most comprehensive training. Yes, basic beauty make-up can be taught in that short amount of time and that is what just one of our workshop covers. However, because there are so many make-up mediums, much more needs to be learned to be a versatile make-up artist. We offer advanced techniques as well as classes on print, production, bridal, and how to find this type of work.
How many classes do I need to take?
This depends on your goals as a make-up artist. If you only want to work with brides, then we suggest The Makeup Experience and “Total Look” Bridal . If becoming a print artist is your goal and you never want to do a wedding, then we suggest all the classes except Bridal.
Can I come and view the facilities?
Please call for an appointment and our Director of Education will be more than happy to answer any questions and show you around the studio.
What are my payment options?
To secure a spot in each workshop, we require a 50% deposit. Because class size is limited, full payment must be received two weeks prior to the start of the class in which you are enrolling. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cash, and checks as payment forms.
When can I start?
We require The Makeup Experience be taken first, so everyone has the proper techniques and desire to advance to our additional classes. Please refer to our calendar to choose a time that coordinates with your schedule. Also, note that we do offer nighttime workshops.
How many students are in each class?
We limit the workshops to six people, so personal attention can be given to each student. Classes vary from two to eight people.
I already own make-up brushes. Am I required to purchase your brush set?
You are required to have a professional brush set (one that you do not use on yourself). If you would like to purchase a new set to add to your collection that is available to you, but not required.
Am I required to purchase your make-up kit?
No. This is an optional item, but you will find it is an exceptional value for a starter kit. The retail value of the kit is $950 and students completing the seven course curriculum can purchase it for $500. If you were to replicate our lipstick palette, it would cost retail approximately $164, our eyeshadow palette, $90.
If I purchase your make-up kit, what comes in it?
A complete custom blending foundation and powder system, concealer tri-wheel, 14 full size eyeshadows in a palette, cake and pencil liners, seven lip pencils, disposable applicators, a lipstick palette with 15 lipsticks, an eight pan blush palette, a full set of primers and sealers, plus many extras.
Do I get any discounts at your retail shop?
Students can purchase their supplies in our retail shop at 40% off retail price. The discount continues to be available to all former students and provides a great savings when restocking your kits.
Do you have any government funding or grants?
Because we are a private institution, we do not offer any financial aid.
I want to learn how to do facials and skin care. Are you an esthetics school?
No, we are a make-up artistry school. Although we touch on basic skin care, make-up application is our focus.
Do you need previous make-up experience to attend Elan Make-up Academy?
No. We require all students take our course, The Makeup Experience, first to enhance your basic knowledge of custom blending foundation, highlighting and contouring, and fixing facial features. After completing this workshop, further classes can be taken in any order.
